Joseph Jacinto Mora was not only an artist but also a sculptor, painter, photographer, illustrator, muralist and author. He was born in Uruguay on October 22, 1876. After moving to the United States, he studied art in the East then worked for Boston newspapers as an artist. Mora came West to California in spring of 1903 first to San Jose to see an old friend, Bob Eaton in June of 1904 He set out for the Hopi village of Oraibi in Arizona. In 1907 He marred Grace Needham and they moved to Mountain View. In the early 1920's he moved to Carmel to be near the Carmel Mission after being commissioned to do the Serra Sarcophogus for Fr. Ramon Mestres. It was unveiled on October 12, 1924. And in 1922 he moved into Pebble Beach and established a home and large studio. He published three books A Log of the Spanish Main in 1933 Trail Dust and Saddle Leather in 1946 and Californios in 1949.
Jo Mora died in Monterey, California on October 10, 1947. |
